When it rains it pours!

When it rains it pours is a term often thrown around, but this year it is entirely apt! With the rain received we are in an entirely different position to recent years, with the very strong likelihood of a big spring. Admittedly some paddocks are too wet, but many pastures will be capable of producing the "rocket fuel" we need for lamb finishing for weeks, maybe months.

So with all this feed, what do we do with it???

Grass fever has clearly hit with ewe prices, and early store lamb prices reflecting an insatiable appetite to eat whatever grass is growing. But do we HAVE to buy stock? There has to be a point at which the price is simply too high.

Similarly with grain prices plummeting, there will also be a temptation to take lambs through on grain. It brings us to the point that "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

There will be occasions this year where selling as store lambs will still be the most profitable. This will go against all normal expectations of selling lambs at

big prices. Maintaining feed quality will be a challenge for some while for others feedlotting is always easier said than done.

Before you make any decisions on whether to buy in stock, whether to carry lambs longer, or whether to feedlot; DO YOUR SUMS!

Whatever you decide to do, do it bloody well. We all know that it is rarely what you do, but how you do it which is most important. Make good, well informed decisions, be proactive rather than reactive, and MAKE things happen.

The greatest risk of a season like this one..... complacency.
